Yann Martel: lIFE AND CAREER
Yann Martel, the author of highly acclaimed Life of Pi, was born on June 25, 1963 in Salamanca, Spain. However, he was not raised in Spain and moved to Costa Rica, France, and Mexico during his childhood. Finally, during adolescence, Martel's family settled down in Canada, and Yann attended high school through college in Ontario. After graduating from college with a degree in philosophy, Martel took a journey around the world and spent significant time in Iran, Turkey, and India learning about religion and studying the cultures of different countries. Martel now resides in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Yann Martel published his first book, named Seven Stories as a 30 year old novelist in 1993. His major success came eight years later
when Life of Pi was published. A year after its publication, Life of Pi won the Man Booker Prize. According to Martel, his inspiration for Life of Pi and its main characters came from a review on author Moacyr Scliar's Max and the Cats in which the main character shares a boat with a jaguar. Martel's most recent work is called 101 Letters to a Prime Minister: The Complete Letters to Stephen Harper which was published in 2012.
